- Retrofit existing bathroom with accessibility features
This homeowner’s mother had been sponge bathing herself for four years because she was unable to step over the lip of the bathtub. The bathroom was also without appropriate ventilation and storage. Valuable floor space was taken by a large free-standing cabinet, making it cramped and difficult to navigate with a walker. We gutted out the paneled walls and put in moisture-resistant greenboard, changed out the dated vanity and fixtures, and replaced the low round toilet with a higher elongated stool to make it easier for an elderly person to settle on. We added safety bars around the room so that she would always have a place to steady herself, installed a functional water-resistant bathroom window and exhaust fan, and built in storage like the custom towel box and inset cabinet into the studs to maximize space. We removed the old bath, crumbling tile, and rotted shower walls and replaced it with this easy to access shower insert, complete with sliding sprayer wand and chair so that her mother can bathe in privacy, ease, and comfort.
